More Than Just Stories: Why Catholic Children’s Books Are Essential in 2025
It’s tougher than ever to teach the Catholic faith to children. That’s the exact mission behind the Little Saints Book Series. I started this series to provide imaginative tales inspired by Catholic teachings, making the lives of the saints accessible and personal for young readers. While the book include a a gentle introduction to a saint, they are not historical biographies. Instead, they focus on showing a child what it means to live like a saint in their own life.
In my book, The Saint’s Shoes, we meet a curious boy named Leo who loves the quiet corners of his church. One afternoon, he discovers a dusty closet and finds a small wooden box inside. Inside the box, on a faded cloth, rests a pair of the simplest, most well-worn leather shoes he’s ever seen. They are the shoes of Saint Jude Thaddeus.
When Leo puts them on and takes three simple steps, he is transported to different moments that show him powerful virtues in action:
- Faith: Leo finds himself on a boat in the middle of a field, where a man with a trusting smile hammers a plank, looking at the sky. A voice whispers, “This is faith”.
- Hope: His second step lands him in a grand temple, where an old man with happy tears in his eyes holds a tiny baby. The voice whispers, “This is Hope”.
- Charity: His final step places him on a dusty road where a man is kindly bandaging the arm of a hurt traveler. The voice explains, “This is Charity…kindness in action”.
When Leo returns to the church, his heart is full. His priest explains that Saint Jude was a humble man who lived his life with faith, hope, and charity. He wasn’t trying to be a great saint; he was just trying to walk the way Jesus showed him. Leo understands and realizes he doesn’t need magic shoes to be holy; he just needs to follow Christ.
The book also introduces children to Saint Jude as the “Saint of Hope” because he helps people in “tricky, scary, or hopeless situations”. It’s a powerful message that teaches kids to turn to God when things feel hard or impossible, just as Saint Jude did.
In a world filled with anxiety and uncertainty, a story about the importance of Christianity and the virtue of hope is a powerful gift. These books help parents and teachers in instilling Catholic values by providing a creative, accessible way to share the core truths of our faith. They show children that the saints are not just figures from the past, but powerful guides who can guide and inspire them on their own path.
